In 2012, a group consisting of 8 students (including me) and 2 adults embarked on a journey to the Benin Republic, the neighbouring country of Nigeria. The purpose of this trip was to immerse us in french culture. We visited the slave route, an integrated farm called Songhai, a museum, went through the markets, learned how to make crepes the french way, etc.

My favourite activity was the Songhai farm. It was interesting to see how waste from different sections were integrated back into the farm for various purposes. For example, they cultivated their own maggots to feed their fish and as a distraction for pests who would normally eat their crops. They also used animal waste to generate bio fuel which was used for generators and cooking! They even grew water hysen for purification purposes! It was an amazing learning journey.

Another fun aspect of the trip was getting to kayak!

Overall, my trip to Benin Republic turned out to be an unforgettable adventure. It was an opportunity to travel to a new country, meet new people, bond with school mates, and eat lots of food -while learning of course!
